22-year-old Mohammad Mehdi Karami and 39-year-old Mohammad Hosseini were convicted of murdering an employee of the Basij (a volunteer paramilitary militia that is part of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps).

In this case, three more people were sentenced to the death penalty, and 11 received prison terms.

Amnesty International claims that the convictions were based on confessions obtained under duress.

Hosseini's lawyer stated in December that he was subjected to severe torture and that confessions obtained under torture have no legal basis.

Iran denies that the confessions were obtained under torture.

Karami's lawyer said that his client was not given the right to speak with the family before the execution.

According to Amnesty International, all accused protesters were denied the right to an adequate defense and access to a lawyer of their choice.

In September 2022, protests began in Iran related to the death of 22-year-old activist Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by the riot police for violating the law on wearing a hijab.

Iranian authorities brutally suppress protests with the use of force.

Human rights activists reported the death of more than 500 people, including more than 400 participants of protests and several dozen employees of security forces, about 18,000 were detained.
