The Polish border guard announced today that in 2022, significantly fewer attempts to illegally cross the border from Belarus were reported compared to the previous year, DPA reported.

Last year, about 15,700 attempts were made, while in 2021 they are about 40,000, the service announced on Twitter.

This represents a drop of 60%.

The high fence built by the Polish government is the main reason for the decline, a spokesman for the border guard told the PAP news agency.

Poland completed construction of the fence at the end of June.

The Polish-Belarusian border is 418 kilometers long.

It is overland for 186 kilometers, and the rest passes through lakes and rivers, writes BTA.

In the late summer and autumn of 2021, the border situation escalated after thousands of people tried to enter the European Union illegally.

The EU accuses Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko of transporting migrants to the union's external border in an attempt to provoke a crisis.

Despite the fence, people continue to try to cross the border without permission.

Only yesterday, the Polish border guard reported 68 such attempts.
