For the first time in a hundred years: Republicans in the House of Representatives have

failed to elect a speaker

nine times .

Ukrinform writes about this.

In order to unblock the work of the legislative body, lawmakers in the lower house of the US Parliament initiated the tenth round of voting.

The Republicans, who nominated their party leader Kevin McCarthy as the main candidate, have not yet demonstrated political unity.

According to the voting results, McCarthy was only 17 votes short of his fellow party members each time.

Because two dozen of his associates, who represent conservatives and the pro-Trump wing, categorically refuse to support his candidacy.

His party members nominate other candidates and vote for them.

Republicans were not even helped by the breaks between votes to come to an agreement within their own political force.

And the Democrats, who are in the minority in the lower house in 2023, show that they do not have any differences in their position.

They are nominating their party leader, Hakeem Jeffries, for Speaker, and have yet to lose a single vote in support of him in every vote.

We will remind that exactly 100 years ago, in 1923, the Republican majority was also unable to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives for the first time.

Then they needed nine rounds of voting for Congressman Frederick Gillette to be elected to this position.

We should add that US President Joe

Biden has already expressed concern that the process is being delayed

and noted that this creates, including, a negative effect for the United States of America in the international arena.

We will remind that the process of electing the speaker of the lower house of the parliament has been going on for several days.

So far, all attempts have failed.
