Election of Mayor of Municipal Corporation of Delhi had to be postponed today due to uproar

New Delhi:

The election of Mayor of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had to be postponed today due to a fierce clash between BJP and AAP councilors and tremendous uproar.

Due to frequent interruptions in the proceedings, the election of the mayor could not be held today.

250 elected councilors have to vote in the mayoral election.

Along with this, 7 Lok Sabha MPs of Delhi, 3 Rajya Sabha MPs and 14 MLAs among the nominated people, who have been made on the consent of the Delhi Assembly Speaker, will also take part in the voting.

Important information related to the case:

  • In the elections held in 250 wards of MCD, Arvind Kejriwal's AAP had won 134 wards for 15 years.

On the other hand, BJP has won 104 wards in this election.

  • The BJP had earlier announced that it would not participate in the mayoral elections to be held in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

However, later taking a U-turn from his earlier announcement, he fielded his candidate in the election.

There was a tussle between the BJP and the AAP over the first oath being administered to the 10 nominated councillors.

  • Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has nominated 10 councilors in MCD.

Nominated councilors are also called aldermen.

They are experts in their field.

  • On the other hand, AAP called the nominated councilors as BJP workers.

Terming it as an attempt to stop the work of the MCD, the AAP said that these aldermen would obstruct the work of the committees.

  • When the presiding officer Satya Sharma first announced the oath taking of the nominated councillors, Aam Aadmi Party councilor Mukesh Goyal objected.

Goyal said that first of all the elected should be sworn in, not the nominated.

  • Despite this, the presiding officer BJP corporator Satya Sharma got the proceedings of the House started.

  • After this the elections had to be postponed due to continuous uproar.

Now everyone is waiting for the next date for the mayoral election. On the fourth floor of the Civic Center for the election, seating arrangements were made for 300 people including officials, councilors, MPs and MLAs in the House complex.

  • Senior AAP leader and Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia has targeted the BJP over the uproar.
