Earlier, only one death and 28 injuries were reported.

A senior army officer was among the victims, Sandoval said, adding that his patrol was attacked after the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán, also known by his nickname El Raton ("The Mouse").

"We have no information about civilians who may have lost their lives," the Mexican defense minister said.

One passenger and two military planes were hit by bullets minutes before takeoff.

The military planes "had to make an emergency landing after receiving a significant number of hits," Sandoval pointed out and added that none of these incidents resulted in casualties or injuries, BTA notes.
