In the United States, the owner of the Sunset Mesa Funeral Home in Colorado, Megan Hess, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for defrauding relatives of the dead by dissecting 560 corpses and selling parts without permission.

Reuters writes about this.

It is reported that the 46-year-old woman, along with her 69-year-old mother, Shirley Koch, processed the bodies and sold their parts to medical companies.

They both pleaded guilty, as a result of which Megan Hess received the maximum term of 20 years, and Shirley Koch was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

"Hess and Koch used their funeral home to steal bodies and body parts using fraudulent and forged donation forms. Hess and Koch's conduct caused tremendous emotional pain to the families and next of kin," prosecutor Tim Neff said in a statement.

Megan Hess operated Sunset Mesa Funeral Home and Donor Services in Colorado.

Former employees told reporters that Megan Hess and Shirley Koch performed unauthorized autopsies.

The owner of the bureau sold body parts to companies that conducted medical research.

Firms bought the arms, legs, heads and torsos of dead people without knowing they had been fraudulently obtained.

According to prosecutors, Hess lied to relatives of the deceased, claiming that they had cremated the bodies.

At the same time, in her funeral home, the woman charged families up to $1,000 for cremation, which never took place.
