Since the beginning of the war, the flag of Ukraine has flown on the slopes of the Dnieper in Kyiv, which is installed on the largest flagpole with a height of almost 90 meters.

The flag had flown before that, but it was from February 24 that it became a real symbol of indomitability for the residents of the left bank of the capital.

"Maorit!" - they wrote on social networks in February, March and April, when the situation around the city was critical.

"Majorit!" - they write even now, when the indomitable city is surviving after rocket attacks and power outages.

Volodymyr Shariy, director of KP "Spetszhitlofond", on whose balance sheet the object is located, told us about the peculiarities of the work.

Who raises the flag of our country - one person or a whole team?

The national flag of Ukraine is maintained by a group of technical specialists in accordance with the regulations.

Specialists carry out constant monitoring of the condition of the canvas itself and maintenance of the flagpole mechanisms and nodes.

In order to raise the flag automatically, it is necessary to perform a number of steps approved by the technical regulations.

Check fasteners, mechanisms, replace carabiners.

The weight of the flag, depending on the material, is 45-60 kilograms.

The work on its lifting is carried out by a group of specialists. 

The size of the canvas is considerable - 16 by 24 meters, how often do you have to replace the flag?

Replacement is carried out at least once a month.

However, depending on the weather conditions, wind loads and the condition of the fabric, a decision on replacing the fabric is made and agreed upon in the established order. 

In the first days of the war, when the enemy was on the approaches to Kyiv, the flag flew over the Dnieper slopes.

How did it work during this period?

With a sense of great responsibility, all the technical regulations stipulated by the regulation were carried out.

Due to wind damage to the canvas, on March 5, 2022, in agreement with the leadership of Kyiv, a decision was made to replace the main flag of the state.

Information about technical works was announced through mass media.

And the flag flying in the first days of the war was handed over to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War for placement in the museum fund.

What is the biggest reason for flag damage - snow, rain, frost, wind?

The most common cause of damage is wind load and ice.

When the predicted or current wind strength increases (sometimes nature is unpredictable) to certain values, a decision is made to reduce the height of the flag location.

We lower it.

This is done for reasons of preservation (reducing the load on the upper part of the structure) and the canvas itself.

How long does it take to raise and lower the flag?

Average replacement time depends on many factors.

The generalized replacement standard is 90 minutes.

Ascent - 7 minutes.

Descent - 6 minutes.

Time may be adjusted depending on weather conditions, humidity and wind strength. 

From what material and where exactly is the main flag of Ukraine made?

The canvases of the national flag are made of combined materials in Ukraine. 

It is said that there are four sets of flag cloth for summer, autumn, spring and winter.
