NATO countries will discuss their defense spending targets in the coming months, with some calling for the 2 percent target to be turned into a floor, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told German news agency DPA.

"Some allies are strongly behind making the current 2 percent target a minimum," Stoltenberg said in an interview.

Stoltenberg also said that he will lead the negotiations.

"We will meet, we will have ministerial meetings, we will have talks in the capitals," the NATO chief said.

He did not say which NATO countries were calling for a more ambitious defense spending target, DPA said.

The head of NATO indicated that he aims to reach an agreement no later than the next regular NATO summit, which will be held in the capital of Lithuania - Vilnius on July 11-12.
