A car driver died in a road accident near the town of Popovo due to failure to follow a road sign, the police in Targovishte announced.

The accident happened on January 2 at around 12:40 p.m. at the intersection of Asen Zlatarov Street and secondary road II-51.

A 72-year-old driver, driving his car, did not stop at a "Stop" road sign.

After that, he was hit from the side by another car driving legally on road II-51 in the direction of the town of Targovishte, driven by a 54-year-old driver from the village of Gulyantsi.

As a result of the collision, the 72-year-old driver was taken to hospital, where he later died.

A 67-year-old female passenger was treated at the same hospital for a non-life-threatening concussion.

The other driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs.

An investigation has been launched into the case.
