Lakhs of people reached the beach to welcome the new year.

Traffic snarls were witnessed on various beach-side roads in Goa after midnight as lakhs of people thronged the seashore to welcome the New Year.

Fireworks were done on some beaches as early as 12 o'clock in the night and tourists were seen welcoming the new year with enthusiasm.

Goa's Catholic population attended midnight mass in churches, while concerts were held in clubs and restaurants.

Long queues of cars were seen on roads leading to various beaches including Calangute, Baga, Sinquerim, Morjim and Keri in North Goa.

However, many beaches in South Goa, including Palolim and Colva, were relatively less crowded.

A senior police officer said that no untoward incident took place during the New Year celebrations.

“Police kept a strict vigil on the beaches.

We also kept an eye on anti-social elements before the celebrations.
