In the European Union, only Italy and Spain also require testing, and health officials from across the bloc failed last week to agree on a common course.

New talks will be held this week.

Starting today, France requires travelers from China to provide a negative COVID-19 test result less than 48 hours before departure and will test arrivals at random.

"France will insist that this methodology be applied throughout the EU," Health Minister Francois Bron said as he and Transport Minister Clément Bonn inspected the new procedures at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport.

Responding to a comment that a Chinese traveler with Covid could now land in another EU country and then travel without being checked to France, Bron replied: "That's why we need to coordinate (in the EU) to be more effective ".

After keeping its borders nearly closed for three years, imposing a strict lockdown regime and relentless testing, Beijing on Dec. 7 abruptly reversed course on living with the virus, and the contagion has spread rapidly in recent weeks, according to Reuters.
