When the holiday of meeting the new year is just around the corner, it is usual to think about gifts and greetings for relatives and friends.

But warm words are no less important than bright boxes and packages under the Christmas tree.

Although the most important thing in greetings is sincerity, in such a difficult year it is worth congratulating each other and wishing good and victory in proper Ukrainian, and not in slang or using borrowed words.

How is it correct: new year or New Year

If we are talking about a holiday that is traditionally celebrated in the Western world on the night from December 31 to January 1, then we write the first word with a capital letter, the second with a small letter (New Year).

If you are talking about a year as a calendar value, even in the context of a greeting, then both words should be used with a small letter (new year).

For example, the greeting will sound like this if "new year" is used in it in the sense of a value equal to 365 days (or 366 in a leap year): "I wish you that the new year is better than all the previous ones!".

What adjectives to use "coming" or "coming"

You can often hear greetings in the spirit of "Happy New Year", but this adjective is far from the best to use in this phrase.

One of the reasons why this is so is the norms of the modern Ukrainian language, which do not allow the use of the present active participle with the suffix "-yuch".

Another reason is that the word "coming" does not fit here even in terms of content, because where or on whom does this year come?

In addition, it is obvious that such a greeting is about the next year, so it is pointless to emphasize it one more time.

And finally, it is worth saying that in the Ukrainian language there is a

wonderful word "prydeshniy", which is a great greeting phrase.

It has a transparent origin - "the one who will come"

and is not borrowed

.

You can also say 

"Happy New Year!".


 And do not forget to congratulate

not with the new year, but with the new year.

  • Not a "toy", but a "toy".

Summing up this year and making wishes for the next, it is worth remembering that

 you are "summing up" and not "summing up",

that you are

spending "this" and not the "current" year.

And

you make a wish for the "next" and not the "next" year.

and a happy new year, but

avoid "prosperity" and "prosperous" year.
