According to people familiar with the matter, a white Hyundai Elantra appeared in the area where the incident occurred. After tracing the white Elantra under the name of Koberg, the authorities then focused the investigation on Koberg, and later compared it to the one that appeared. Coberg's DNA matched samples taken at the crime scene.

The police have seized the vehicle under Koberg's name, but have not yet found the murder weapon, and did not explain other details, such as whether Koberg knew the four dead beforehand.

WSU students said Koberg was a graduate student in criminal law, but the university declined to comment.

It is understood that the victims were Ethan Chapin, a 20-year-old male student, Xana Kernodle, a 20-year-old female student, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, a 21-year-old female college student.
