The European Union sharply criticized today the increased sentence of the ousted leader of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, to a total of 33 years, reported France Press, quoted by BTA.

A spokesman for the European Commission called the verdict a "destruction of democracy and the rule of law" in Myanmar.

He said the sentences against 77-year-old Suu Kyi and former president Win Minh "complete a series of purely political cases without respect for legal process" which "represent a clear attempt to exclude democratically elected leaders from political life".

They sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to an additional 6 years in prison for corruption
