At least ten victims were killed in a fire this night in a hotel complex with a casino in the Cambodian city of Poipet, which is located on the border with Thailand, France Press reported.

The fire broke out at 11:30 p.m. local time (4:30 p.m. GMT), leaving "about ten people dead and thirty injured," according to the preliminary police report, AFP said.

The scale of the fire can be seen in footage shared on social networks.

Some of the injured were hospitalized in the Thai province of Sa Kaeo, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the neighboring country reported.

"The authorities are trying to control the flames with the help of fire trucks from Thailand," the department reported.

A Thai emergency service official told AFP that the fire spread quickly in the high-rise hotel-casino because of the carpeting on the floors.

During the fire, there were also foreign citizens in the building.

The Cambodian border town of Poipet is a popular destination with many casinos that attract Thai visitors as they are banned in their homeland.

In recent months, a number of deadly fires have been observed in Southeast Asia, often among the possible causes being the lack of compliance with safety measures, according to AFP.

In August, a fire at a disco near the Thai city of Pattaya claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly young people.

A month later, 32 were found dead in a karaoke bar in a neighborhood of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.
