Arrest of NCP's Anil Deshmukh, Shiv Sena's Sanjay Raut is 'best example' of 'misuse' of central agencies, says NCP chief Sharad Pawar.

Listing the names of leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance in Maharashtra, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief and former Union minister Sharad Pawar said on Thursday that NCP's Anil Deshmukh, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Sanjay Raut and others The arrest of the leaders is the 'best example' of how central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) can be 'misused'.

He said, "I will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, so that no one has to go through such a situation in future..."

Significantly, Anil Deshmukh, who was a minister in the previous Shiv Sena-Congress-NCP government of Maharashtra led by Uddhav Thackeray, was released on Wednesday itself.

Anil Deshmukh, accused in the corruption case, got bail after one year.

Before reaching home after his release from jail, 72-year-old Anil Deshmukh went to the Siddhivinayak temple in an open-top jeep, accompanied by Sharad Pawar's daughter and party MP Supriya Sule.

In the same year, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut spent more than three months in jail in connection with a money laundering case registered by the ED, and was also released on bail in November.

The court had also reprimanded the ED for 'illegally' arresting Sanjay Raut.

Anil Deshmukh was accused of extortion, while Sanjay Raut's name is linked to the alleged scam related to the housing scheme.

Both the leaders have said that this is an act of political vendetta by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre.

From Maharashtra to Jharkhand to Delhi, opposition leaders in many states have been accusing the BJP of 'misusing central agencies' like the ED and the CBI.

Anil Deshmukh was granted bail by the Bombay High Court on 12 December in the main corruption case registered by the CBI, but the order was put on hold for 10 days as the agency sought time to file an appeal in the Supreme Court.

The court will now hear the CBI's appeal in January after the winter vacations.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had refused to interfere in the bail granted to Anil Deshmukh by the High Court.

ED arrested Anil Deshmukh in November 2021.
