Kim Jong Un (Hangul 김정은, Hanja 金正恩, English Kim Jong-Un) is a North Korean political announced the communist state's new military goals in 2023 at a meeting of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, state media reported today, hinting at another year of intense weapons testing and tension, Reuters reported.

On the second day of the sixth extended plenary meeting of the Party Central Committee, Kim reviewed the newly created threat situation on the Korean Peninsula and the broader political landscape, the statement said.

Kim, who is the third-generation leader of the DPRK, set the direction of the "fight against the enemy" and the goals of strengthening defense power, the media release said.

He specified the principles of foreign policy activity and the direction of the fight against the enemy, which our party and government must strictly observe in order to protect sovereign rights and national interests, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCTA) reported.

New major objectives were presented, which will be zealously pursued in 2023, to strengthen self-defense capabilities in preparation for various deviations in the political situation.

The North Korean Central Committee did not elaborate on those goals, but Kim's remarks could mean the isolated country will continue to build up its military potential.

North Korea fired two missiles

North Korea has fired an unprecedented number of missiles this year, and many of the tests were linked to the development of super-priority strategic weapons under a five-year plan laid out at a congress of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea in early 2021. The list includes tactical nuclear missiles, a new intercontinental ballistic missile , supersonic cruise warheads, nuclear submarines and reconnaissance satellites.

Tensions have remained high all year amid North Korea's constant weapons tests and flared up again this week after five North Korean drones crossed into South Korea.

This prompted Seoul to raise fighter jets and attack helicopters and try to shoot them down.
