A wealthy Russian regional lawmaker has died after falling from a third-floor window of a hotel in India, with police investigating whether it was an accident or suicide, DPA reported, citing the Hindustan Times newspaper.

Sixty-five-year-old Pavel Antov was visiting the Indian state of Odisha to celebrate his birthday and died after falling from the window of his room, the statement said.

Recently, a number of influential Russian businessmen have died under unusual circumstances.

The death of Antov, who made his fortune in the meat and sausage industry and was a member of the United Russia party, which supports the Kremlin government, was widely reported in Russia and Ukraine.

Ukrainian media noted that on social media, Antov described the Russian invasion as an act of terrorism, and later deleted his post and confirmed his loyalty to President Vladimir Putin.

The regional parliament in the western Vladimir region, where he was a lawmaker, released a message of condolence saying Antov's colleagues were shocked by the tragedy and noting that the businessman was full of energy and plans for the future.

The message said Antov was one of the most active patrons of arts and cultural projects in the region east of Moscow and said his loss would be deeply felt.

Three days before Antov's death, one of the three people who accompanied him during his visit to India died of a heart attack in the same hotel, a police inspector told the Indian news agency ANN.

He added that Antov fell into depression after the death of that person.
