Seventy-one Chinese Air Force aircraft, including fighter jets and drones, have entered Taiwan's air defense identification zone in the past 24 hours.

This was announced by the island's government on Monday, December 26, Reuters reports.

This Chinese incursion into Taiwan's air defense zone is the largest recorded incursion.

"We are assisting Taiwan and will continue to do so to maintain an adequate self-defense capability in accordance with our long-standing commitments and our one-China policy," the White House said.

Also, 43 aircraft crossed the so-called middle line of the Taiwan Strait, which is the unofficial dividing line between Taiwan and mainland China.

Taiwan unofficially said it was a simulated attack on Taiwanese and American targets in the region.

The People's Republic of China reported conducting military exercises in the sea and airspace around Taiwan in response to what it said was a "provocation" by Taipei and the United States.

The day before, it was said that the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China are conducting joint naval exercises.

They will continue until the end of 2022.
