At least two people died overnight after a bus plunged into a river while crossing a bridge in the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia, emergency services said on Saturday.

The incident happened on Friday evening near Vigo, near the border with Portugal.

A regional newspaper reported that the bus was carrying people visiting relatives imprisoned in Monterosso in central Galicia.

Emergency services said two bodies were recovered and two other people, including the bus driver, were rescued and taken to hospital.

"There may have been more people on the bus," they said on Twitter, posting a photo of the vehicle in the stormy waters.
