Charles Sobhraj was released from jail on Friday on the orders of Nepal's top court.

Notorious criminal Charles Sobhraj was released from jail on Friday after being in jail for 19 years on the orders of Nepal's top court.

Sobhraj, the son of French origin of Indian and Vietnamese parents, was handed over to immigration officials to complete paperwork regarding his release.

The officers provided this information.

A joint bench of Justice Sapna Pradhan Malla and Justice Tilak Prasad Shrestha on Wednesday ordered the release of 78-year-old Sobhraj from jail.

His release has been delayed by a day.

Immigration officials on Thursday requested to postpone the release till Friday, citing lack of space to keep him.

The apex court had ordered the government to extradite Sobhraj within 15 days to the country which had issued him the passport, unless he was wanted in some other cases.

Known as the 'Bikini Killer', Sobhraj was serving a life sentence in a Kathmandu jail since 2003 in connection with the murder of American woman Connie Jo Bronjic in Nepal in 1975.

He was convicted of the murder of Canadian tourist Laurent Carrier in 2014 and given a second life sentence.

Life sentence in Nepal means 20 years of imprisonment.

Sobhraj had filed a petition claiming that he was kept in jail for more than necessary.

After this, the division bench of the apex court pronounced this order.

There is a legal provision to release prisoners who have completed 75 percent of their sentence in jail and have shown good character during this period.

Through his petition, Sobhraj had claimed that he had completed his jail term in view of the relaxation given to senior citizens in Nepal.

He claimed that he had spent 19 years in prison out of his 20-year sentence and had been recommended for release for good behaviour.

Sobhraj was spotted in a casino in Kathmandu in August 2003 and arrested.

He was tried and sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.
