A cold front moving through the US has disrupted Americans' pre-holiday plans, canceled thousands of flights and snarled snow-covered roads.

Yesterday, more than 2,156 flights - domestic or international: to or from the US, did not materialize.

Another 1,576 flights have been canceled in advance for today.

Airports in Chicago and Denver are reporting the most canceled flights so far.

Homeless shelters are overcrowded.

In Kansas City, Missouri, one person died after his car overturned in an icy river.

Cold air is moving across the central states to the east, with wind and cold warnings affecting about 135 million people.

In Montana, temperatures dropped to minus 46 degrees Celsius.

Schools and ski areas are closed, and several thousand customers are without power.

In Des Moines and Iowa, with the wind, temperatures feel like minus 38 degrees Celsius.

These temperatures make frostbite possible in less than five minutes. 

Will there be snow at Christmas?

In Buffalo, New York, forecasters are predicting heavy snow and wind gusts of up to 105 km/h, while Denver recorded minus 31 degrees Celsius, the coldest day in 32 years.

Right now it's snowing in the Chicago area, it's minus 18 degrees Celsius, but with the wind it feels like minus 31 degrees, and the thermometer keeps going down.

For tomorrow, the forecast of the meteorologists is that it will be even colder.
