Dhankhar said that Sonia Gandhi's statement regarding the judiciary is beyond her understanding and thinking.

new Delhi:

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has reacted to UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's remark "invalidating the judiciary".

Rajya Sabha's ex-officio Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said on Friday that if he had not said anything in this matter, it would have been to reject the oath of the Constitution taken by him.

At the same time, he would have failed to fulfill his constitutional obligations.

Senior Congress leader Pramod Tiwai raised the issue in the House and his senior colleague and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge demanded that if a Lok Sabha member (Sonia Gandhi) speaks outside, it should not be discussed in the Rajya Sabha.

Sonia Gandhi had said that the government is trying to weaken the judiciary on the pretext of judicial reform.

Objecting to this, the Vice President and Dhankhar termed Sonia Gandhi's remarks regarding the judiciary as indecent.

Speaking in the Upper House of Parliament, Dhankhar said that Sonia Gandhi's statement regarding the judiciary is beyond her understanding and thinking.

He said that the former Congress President's remarks are totally inappropriate, which indicates lack of faith in democracy.

Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar said, 'UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's statement is beyond my understanding.

Weakening the judiciary is completely different from my views.

This is the pillar of democracy.

I urge and expect the leaders not to make allegations of favoritism on high constitutional posts.

Dhankhar said, 'Calling the judiciary illegal and invalid means the death knell of democracy.

This partisan fight has to be resolved among themselves.

He said that if he had not reacted, it would have had "disgraceful consequences".

Rajya Sabha Chairman further said, 'I can assure the members that I have done extensive homework with all the people who know about this subject.'

At the same time, Union Minister and Leader of the House Piyush Goyal said that Congress President Kharge should reflect who the allegations were against him.

The person on whom Sonia Gandhi made such allegations is the person elected by both the Houses of the Parliament and the Vice President of India.

Kiren Rijiju had raised questions on the collegium system

Earlier, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju had raised questions on the collegium system.

He had said that the collegium system is like an alien to the Constitution of India.

However, he also said that the government respects this process, because according to the democratic system of the country, no one can adopt the judiciary.

He also claimed that the Supreme Court, at its own discretion, had formed the collegium during a hearing.

At the same time, while answering the question related to the appointment of judges, he said in the Rajya Sabha that until a new system is made regarding the appointment of judges, the issue of vacancies in the judiciary and the question of appointments will continue to arise.
