Zelensky set off for Washington today after visiting the frontline city of Bakhmut in Ukraine yesterday, where one of the fiercest fighting has erupted since the start of the war, to comfort officers and soldiers.

"It is not only highly symbolic but also extremely important for Mr Zelensky to depart for an official visit to the United States immediately after visiting Bakhmut, the site of the most intense fighting," Podoljaco told Reuters in a written response.

"First, the visit itself, and the level at which talks are planned, are clear evidence of a high level of trust between the two countries. Second, Russia's attempt to demonstrate that our bilateral relationship is cooling will come to nothing during this trip."

Podolyako said Russia's characterization of Ukrainian-U.S. relations was "very far from the truth."

"The United States unequivocally supports Ukraine," he stressed.

He said that Zelensky will have the opportunity to show the American political elite the true scale of this war, what it really looks like, and the importance of ending it properly under the right conditions.

"No. 4, weapons, weapons, and more weapons. It's important to explain why we need certain types of weapons. Especially armored vehicles, the latest missile defense systems and long-range missiles," he said.

Podoljako pointed out that Zelensky will explain why the provision of relevant weapons to Ukraine will not cause the escalation of the war, but can greatly reduce Russia's combat power.

"In my view, this trip will undoubtedly start and perfect military cooperation in key areas, further mobilize bipartisan political support in the United States, and paint a clearer picture of the future if the war does not end properly. image."

Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today that the West's continued arming of Ukraine would "deepen" the conflict and could backfire for Kyiv.

"The supply of arms is continuing and on a larger scale. All this will of course lead to a worsening of the conflict, which does not bode well for Ukraine," he said.

Asked if Moscow expected anything positive from Zelensky's trip, Peskov replied: "No."
