The number of people who committed suicide in India has increased between 2019 and 2021.

Minister of State for Labor and Employment, Rameshar Teli, while presenting the figures on the increasing incidents of suicide in the Lok Sabha, said that in comparison to 2019, the cases of suicide in the country have increased by 18 percent in 2021.

In fact, the opposition MPs raised the matter of suicides of youth and farmers in the Rajya Sabha on Monday and demanded intervention from the government.

Lok Sabha MP Dr. TR Parivender had said that the number of citizens committing suicide is increasing in the country and there is concern about it.

In response to the MP's question, Minister of State for Labor and Employment Rameshwar Teli, while presenting the figures of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), said in a written reply that in 2019, a total of 1,39,123 suicide cases were recorded by the state governments in the country.

At the same time, in 2020, the number of suicides in the country increased to 1,53,052.

Whereas in 2021, the number of suicides further increased to 1,64,033. 

He told that in 2021, maximum 22,207 cases were recorded in Maharashtra.

Presenting the figures, Rameshwar Teli said that along with improving the employability of the youth, creating employment opportunities is the primary concern of the government.

The government has taken various steps for employment generation in the country through big government schemes.

Significantly, this issue was also raised in the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Congress MP Pramod Tiwari told NDTV, "I said in the House that this is a very important issue. For the last 5-6 years, youths are moving towards suicide. This is the frustration of unemployment. The way youths do not get employment." There is a feeling of guilt in their mind that they did not live up to the expectations of their parents. Children should not be expected too much. It is necessary that the government create employment opportunities."

In the Rajya Sabha, the question of farmer's suicide was also raised.

Aam Aadmi Party MP Sant Balbir Singh raised the issue of increasing economic crisis among farmers and agricultural labourers.

He said that due to the economic crisis, the incidents of suicide among farmers and agricultural laborers are increasing.

The government should give compensation to the affected farmers and remove the economic crisis.

AAP MP Sant Balbir Singh told NDTV that farming has become a loss-making business.

According to the data of the National Crime Records Bureau, 53,000 farmers and agricultural laborers have committed suicide between 2017 and 2021.

Farmers are not getting the price of the crop.

MSP should be available on all crops.
