Many people died after drinking spurious liquor in Bihar

New Delhi:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has decided to appoint its own probe team to conduct an "on-the-spot" probe into the deaths due to spurious liquor in Bihar.

Officials told on Saturday that eight more people have died due to consumption of spurious liquor in two districts of Bihar.

While six people have lost their lives in Siwan district adjacent to Saran, two people have become victims of spurious liquor in Begusarai.

Unconfirmed reports have claimed that 60 people have died so far in Saran district after consuming spurious country liquor.

However, the officials are telling the number of dead 30.

In the wake of media reports regarding deaths of people from other districts in the Bihar spurious liquor tragedy, the NHRC said it has "decided to appoint an investigation team headed by one of its members to conduct on-the-spot investigation".

The commission said in a statement, "It wants to know where and what kind of medical treatment is being given to these victims."

Most of them are from poor families and probably they cannot afford expensive treatment in private hospitals.

Therefore, it becomes extremely important on the part of the state government to provide them better medical treatment wherever possible.

The NHRC said, “The commission wants to know about the relief and rehabilitation being provided by the state government.

Also, with a view to eliminate this social evil completely, what steps have been taken by the State Government to destroy the places of illegal liquor manufacturing in the entire State, because in Bihar such incidents happen at regular intervals. Incidents keep happening.

Officials had told on Friday that the NHRC has issued a notice to the Bihar government and the state police chief in the Saran spurious liquor case.

Significantly, in April 2016, the sale and consumption of liquor was completely banned in Bihar.

However, the NHRC found that there were flaws in the implementation of this ban.

The commission said in a statement that apparently the recent incident "indicates the failure" of the state government to implement its policy on banning the sale and consumption of liquor in the state.
