From December 2021, Germany's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal opened this morning in the port of Wilhelmshaven.

Economy Minister Robert Habeck, Finance Minister Christian Lindner and Lower Saxony Prime Minister Stefan Weil also attended the ceremony.

The floating terminal off the coast of the North Sea in Lower Saxony will help to overcome gas shortages in Germany caused by a lack of supplies from Russia.

By the end of next year, four more terminals should be built in Brunsbüttel, Stade and Lubmin.

The Federation of German Industry (BDI) warned against overdoing the euphoria: even with the new terminal, the danger of gas shortages is not averted.

As of December 2021, however, he indicated that he was already negotiating more supply contracts: "In fact, we have successfully established such a terminal here in a very short time. The specialized vessel will perform this task by operationally carrying out the conversion of the liquefied gas into a gaseous state and feeds into the German energy system. This is a very important contribution to our security."

According to the chancellor, gas supplies to Germany in the winter of 2023/24 will also be provided by Norway, the USA, the Persian Gulf and the Netherlands, BNR notes.
