Bulgaria will continue to support Kosovo to become part of the European Union (EU) family.

This was stated in a post by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on Twitter.

Kosovo's application for EU membership demonstrates the clear intention to continue the European Union reform program, added the MFA.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, submitted the country's application for joining the EU.

Official: Kosovo has applied for EU membership

Before possible membership, Kosovo must reach an agreement with Serbia to normalize relations, Reuters noted.

The EU is already working on a deal it hopes both sides will agree to within a year.

Kosovo is recognized as an independent state by about 110 countries, but not by Serbia, Russia, China and five EU member states - Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Spain.

Kosovo was the only country in the region that had not yet applied for EU membership.
