Four people have been admitted to hospital and are today in a critical condition after a stampede at the entrance to a concert hall in London last night, AFP reported, citing local police.

Police were called at 9.35pm local time last night after reports of "a large number of people jostling to get in" at the O2 Academy in the London Borough of Brixton.

Eight people were taken to hospital, four of whom remain in a critical condition, Scotland Yard said.

Upon arrival, police found several people with injuries as a result of the stampede.

Two minor victims were treated on the spot by law enforcement.

Police immediately launched an investigation and a cordon was formed around the event hall.

According to the program last night, it was supposed to host a concert by the Nigerian Afrobeat artist Asake.

Scotland Yard added that investigations are continuing at the site, and no arrests have been made so far.

London Police Commissioner Ade Adelekan described the circumstances as "extremely shocking" and commented on videos of the incident that appeared on social networks.

In cases where police officers use force, they know they are responsible for their actions, Adekalan added, and when asked about a leaked video of the incident, he assured that no police dogs were used.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the stampede to contact her.

The art deco hall "O2 Akademi" opened its doors in 1929 and has a capacity of 5,000 seats, notes BTA.
