Spain's law enforcement authorities have uncovered a network for the production and distribution of contraband tobacco products, BTA reports, citing a statement from the Spanish Civil Guard.
According to the sites "Navarra.com" and "Deia.eus" it was the largest network for such activity in Europe.
16 people were arrested when the network was uncovered and its activities broken up.
Three of them are Bulgarians.
Seven of the detainees are Ukrainians.
The rest are Spanish subjects.
A record amount of cigarettes was seized by the capital's criminal investigators
Five raids were carried out in the autonomous provinces of Navarre and the Basque Country.
During the operation, more than 31 tons of tobacco and 4.5 million packs of cigarettes were seized.
The network busted by Spanish law enforcement produced around one million cigarettes a day.
