At least 120 people have died after the worst floods in years in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa, the BBC reported.

Torrential rains poured down for hours.

The main roads remained under water, there are also destroyed houses.

Entire neighborhoods were flooded with muddy water and houses and roads were torn up by sinkholes, including the N1 highway connecting the capital to the country's main port, Matadi.

Many of the dead were in hilly areas where landslides occurred.

The government announced a three-day mourning period, reports news.bg.

Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde and the government delegation he led arrived in Kinshasa to assess the damage.

He said rescue services were still searching for survivors.
