EU member states have decided to stop payments to Hungary in the amount of 6.3 billion euros from European funds.

This was done on the recommendation of the permanent representatives in the community.

The ambassadors decided by a qualified majority to take measures to protect the EU budget against the consequences of the violation of the rule of law in Hungary.

They are in the field of public procurement, the effectiveness of the prosecution and the fight against corruption.

During the procedure, Hungary committed to take a number of remedial measures that, according to the European Commission, could lead to addressing the problems.

However, the Council believes that the adopted measures have significant weaknesses and are not able to adequately address the shortcomings.

At the same time, however, due to the number and significance of the satisfactorily implemented measures and given the degree of cooperation of the authorities, it would be reasonable to consider that the risk to the budget amounts to 55 percent of Brussels' commitments under the relevant programs.

Twice so far, the commission has proposed cutting 7.5 billion euros from EU funds, or two-thirds of Hungary's funding.

The measures taken by the council are temporary.

They can be canceled at the proposal of the commission, without loss of money from the European funds, if the situation is completely changed within two years, BNR adds.

Earlier, member states welcomed the positive assessment given by the commission to Hungary's National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

This also happened at the meeting of the permanent representatives in Brussels.

A recommendation was made that the council also approve the plan.
