After torrential downpours that claimed one life last week, heavy rain fell again tonight in Lisbon.

They caused floods and greatly confused traffic on streets and roads, local authorities reported, quoted by BTA.

The city hall of the Portuguese capital declared a red level of alert and urged its residents to "avoid travel", and at least fifteen people had to be evacuated from their homes, as was the case with visitors to a supermarket in the Alcantara district.

Flooding in Lisbon, a woman died

"Today will be a difficult day," warned Andre Fernandes, head of the civil protection service, at a press conference.

According to his data, as of 07:00 (GMT) today, most of the approaches to Lisbon were closed or severely disrupted.

"We had to close some flooded tunnels and it's causing chaos," the city's mayor, Carlos Moedas, told CNN's Portuguese affiliate.

He explained that the torrential rains tonight resembled the heavy rains that caused widespread flooding on Thursday.

Then a nearly 50-year-old woman drowned in a basement.
