The German Language Society named "Zeitenwende" the German word of the year.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz used this expression in the context of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine.
This was reported on the society's website on December 9.
It should be noted that "Zeitenwende" translates as "turning point".
"Not at all a new word, which specifically denotes the beginning of the Christian era, but in a more general sense - any transition to a new era, was used in this sense by Federal Chancellor Scholz.
Russia's attack on Ukraine on February 24, 2022 marks a "turning point in the history of our continent," the message reads.
The association says that the federal president Frank-Walter Steinmeier also spoke about the "turn of the era" in the same context.
Germany's economic and energy policy had to be completely changed.
Relations with other international partners, such as China, have also been critically examined.
There was also an emotional turn for many people," the society says.
Zeitenwende" included the following words in the top five words of the year:
Krieg um Frieden -
war for peace;
gas price restrictions;
Inflationsschmerz - and
Klimakleber - climatic glue
