Germany is confident of the loyalty of its security forces, the interior ministry said today, responding to allegations that a far-right group suspected of plotting a coup had tried to recruit soldiers and police.

"We firmly maintain the view that those working in the security services firmly support the constitution," a ministry spokeswoman told reporters in Berlin.

According to her, the Federal Criminal Police Service strongly emphasizes inculcating democratic values ​​in its officers, and this is also strongly advocated in the training of the police services under the direction of the ministry.

On Wednesday, 25 people were arrested, suspected of being members or supporters of the group, which prosecutors say was planning a violent overthrow of state order.

Yesterday, authorities ordered 23 of the suspects to remain in custody for questioning.

The attorney general's office said the group had been trying to recruit new members with a focus on the military and police.

Among those arrested were active military and several former members of the army and police.

According to prosecutors, some members of the group planned an armed attack on the Bundestag (lower house of parliament) in Berlin. 

German MPs have called for a review of Bundestag security measures.
