German Chancellor Olaf Scholz

Olaf Scholz is a German politician from the Social Democratic Party (GSDP).

From December 2021, he hopes his country will acquire an anti-missile shield in the next five years, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.

"The government is currently talking to the manufacturers of various systems to prepare for concrete decisions," Scholz said in an interview with German media company Funke.

The German chancellor also confirmed his intentions to increase defense spending to 2 percent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP) to meet the NATO target, which also includes expanding air defenses to create the so-called " Sky Shield" with other member states of the alliance.

Germany, as well as dozens of other NATO allies, is seeking to acquire air defense systems to protect allied territories from missiles, Reuters recalls.

Among the options under consideration are the Israeli Arrow 3 system, the American Patriot and the German IRIS-T.

In November, a stray missile landed in Poland near the border with Ukraine, drawing attention to the vulnerability of NATO's air defenses and prompting Germany to supply Patriot air defense systems to Poland.
