The Taliban captured Afghanistan on August 15 last year.

Kabul:

The Taliban administration in Afghanistan publicly executed a murder accused in a stadium on Wednesday.

This is the first time since the Taliban rule in Afghanistan again in August 2021, when a person has been publicly executed.

According to the Taliban official, this punishment has been given under Sharia law.

The accused was hanged in the middle of the road.

According to Zabihullah Mujahid, the top spokesman for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA), the accused was hanged in western Farah province in front of hundreds of spectators and several top Taliban officials, including the province.

"The decision to sentence was made very carefully," Mujahid said after approval by the country's three highest courts and the Taliban's supreme leader, Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada.

The hanged person has been identified as Tajmir of Herat province.

He was convicted five years ago for killing another person and stealing his motorcycle and mobile phone.

A statement by spokesman Mujahid said Tajmir was arrested by Taliban security forces after the victim's family accused him of the crime.

The statement did not say when the arrest took place, but Tajmir had reportedly confessed to the murder.

During the country's previous Taliban rule in the late 1990s, the group carried out public executions, floggings and stonings of those convicted of crimes in Taliban courts.

The Taliban initially promised to be more lenient and allow women and minority rights in the final weeks of US and NATO forces pulling out of the country after a 20-year war after taking over Afghanistan in 2021.
