Kathmandu:

The recently held elections in Nepal have paved the way for Janmat Party and Nagrik Immunti Party to enter Parliament from Terai or Madhesh region.

With this, the monopoly of the two traditional political forces in the southern plains bordering India has come to an end.

In the elections held in the country on November 20, the number of seats of two strong Terai parties, Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) led by Upendra Mahato and Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LSP) led by Mahant Thakur has decreased by 50 percent.

Five years ago, the combined strength of the two Terai parties was 33 in the 275-member House of Representatives (HOR).

However, with the rise of two new political parties in the region, their combined strength has come down to 16 seats.

In the HOR, 165 members will be elected through direct voting, while the remaining 110 will be elected through a proportional election system.

A party or coalition needs 138 seats for a clear majority.

The JSP has won seven seats in the recent election under direct voting and will get five more seats under the proportional voting system.

Similarly, the LSP has won just four seats, but will not get any seats under proportional voting as the party has failed to get national recognition.

Political analyst Rajesh Ahiraj, who closely follows Madhesi politics, said that corruption, communalism and inflammatory politics are the main factors that weakened these traditional Madhesi parties and tarnished their image in the Terai region.

He said, “These parties raised slogans in favor of the rights and representation of the Madhesi people, but could not stand on this issue for a long time.

Their politics has become power-centric and they are joining hands with big parties like Nepali Congress and CPN-UML for the purpose of sharing power, ignoring their principles and slogans.

CK Raut, who in the past led an extremist group in the Terai region, recently joined mainstream politics and contested elections for the first time.

Janmat Party was banned for some time for raising separatist slogans.
