Pope Francis compared the war in Ukraine with the operation of Nazi Germany during the Second World War.

This was reported by Vatican News.

During the weekly general audience in the Paul VI hall, Pope Francis once again reminded about the war in Ukraine and noted that "history is repeating itself today."

The Pope noted that our country is experiencing the horrors of the Second World War today.

He called to turn their prayers to the Mother of God, so that she "comforts all those who suffer from the cruelty of war."

The Pope addressed the Polish pilgrims present.

"On Monday, the Center for Catholic-Jewish Relations of the Catholic University of Lublin marked the anniversary of Operation Reinhard. During the Second World War, it led to the destruction of almost two million victims, mostly of Jewish origin. History repeats itself. Currently, we see what is happening in Ukraine," - said the Pope.

Operation "Reinhard" continued in 1942-1943 in the Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka camps.

About 1.7 million Jews and an unknown number of Poles, Roma and Soviet prisoners of war were killed then.

"Let the memory of this terrible event awaken in everyone intentions and actions of peace," the pontiff said.

He called this operation "destruction".

"And history repeats itself. Now we see what is happening in Ukraine," he emphasized.

We will remind you that Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovy met with the Pope during the event.

He handed the pontiff a symbolic gift.
