Russia has begun expanding its defense positions along the country's internationally recognized border with Ukraine, the British Ministry of Defense announced today in the latest military intelligence report, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

There have been reports of trench digging in the border Belgorod region since at least April, but now the new facilities are more sophisticated and designed to repel a mechanized attack," the ministry said.

 "While this may in part be an attempt to stoke feelings of patriotism in Russia, the move likely indicates that some leaders in Moscow believe there is a real threat of an invasion by Ukrainian forces," the intelligence assessment added.
