Police in Barcelona have arrested two men, aged 31 and 51, on suspicion of murdering a German man, less than a week after the man's body parts were found in a rubbish bin, DPA reported.

Yesterday the media announced the nationality of the 50-year-old victim and the information was confirmed by the police.

Last Tuesday, parts of the dismembered body were found by a scrap dealer in a dumpster on a busy street in an upscale neighborhood, right outside the building where the German had lived for many years as a rental, a security guard said.

"Various clues linking this location to a suspected violent death" were found there, police said.

According to media reports and neighbors' testimony, the arrested are a 31-year-old from Ukraine and a 51-year-old Irishman, who briefly lived in the German's apartment as tenants.

The two are believed to have placed the torso and other body parts in a suitcase and dumped it in the container.

The two suspects appeared yesterday before a judge, who imposed a remand "in custody" for the 51-year-old.

The younger man was released, but his passport was confiscated.

He is not allowed to leave Spain and must appear regularly before judicial officials in Barcelona.
