Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized today at the memorial ceremony that it was thanks to Jiang Zemin that the Communist Party survived political storms.

Former Chinese President Jiang Zemin died last Wednesday at the age of 96.

During his tenure, he surprised skeptics with a number of China's achievements after leading the country into diplomatic isolation in the period following the Tiananmen Square protests (May-June 1989).

He also warmed relations with the US and became the head of the country's unprecedented economic boom.

Xi Jinping said Jiang took over as the country's leader at a time when the party, the army and the state were in a "serious period of external pressure and internal difficulties", referring to the 1989 pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square.

"In the late 1980s and early 1990s, there were serious political storms both at home and abroad, and socialism worldwide experienced serious complications.

Some Western countries have imposed so-called 'sanctions' against China," Xi Jinping told the audience of senior Chinese leaders, who included Jiang Zemin's direct successor, Hu Jintao.

However, Jiang Zemin has stepped forward to uphold China's reforms and opening up to the world, he has strengthened ties between the party and the people, engaged in "diplomatic struggles" and defended China's independence and dignity, security and stability, the leader added. the Asian side.

The Head of State described the death of the former president as an immeasurable loss and said the country must turn grief into strength and use his legacy to write a new chapter in the development of the party.

"Do not believe in evil, fear neither ghosts nor pressure, and do everything in your power to overcome all difficulties and challenges on the way forward," urged Xi Jinping.
