The Government of Japan, in response to the situation in Ukraine and in cooperation with international organizations represented in Bulgaria: the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), has decided to provided in 2023 aid in the amount of over 1 million US dollars for the Ukrainian refugees on the territory of Bulgaria, reported the team of the Embassy of Japan in Sofia, quoted by BTA. 

The embassy also presented information on individual projects to assist Ukrainian refugees.

The name of the project with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is "Protection and assistance for Ukrainian refugees in Bulgaria", with the amount of assistance (maximum) of USD 445,898.

The project will provide Ukrainian refugees (with an emphasis on women and children) a hotline for consultations on issues and problems arising in their lives in Bulgaria, a legal consultation unit, as well as training opportunities, including Bulgarian language courses necessary for life them in Bulgaria.

The project implemented with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is "Protection and direct assistance to persons living in Bulgaria affected by the crisis in Ukraine".

The maximum amount of assistance is $311,231.

It will provide support for the early integration of Ukrainian refugees and increase their access to social services such as health care, employment opportunities, accommodation, as well as support targeting vulnerable groups with specific needs. 

The project with UNICEF is "Support for humanitarian education and development of adolescents, and participation of Ukrainian refugee children and youth and other vulnerable children and youth in host communities in Bulgaria".

The maximum amount of support is $262,500.

The project will provide opportunities for high-quality education for Ukrainian refugees, including distance and online learning, Bulgarian language training, as well as support for overcoming possible problems related to gender discrimination and supporting the participation of refugees in social programs. 

"We hope that these projects, implemented in cooperation between the government of Japan and various international organizations, will reduce the vulnerability and difficulties in the lives of Ukrainian refugees in Bulgaria and improve their vital infrastructure, including their survival during the coming winter."

The government of Japan hopes that with this aid it will at least slightly ease the burden on the Bulgarian state in its efforts to support Ukrainian refugees on its territory.
