Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala):

The fishermen's protest against the under-construction Vizhinjam sea-port, which lasted for more than 130 days, has been called off for the time being on Tuesday.

Vicar General Eugene Pereira, who is leading the demonstration, announced its cancellation.

Perera, however, told reporters here that the protest was not being called off because they were satisfied with the steps taken by the state government or the promises made by them.

He said that it is being canceled because the protest has reached a certain stage and if needed, they will start the protest again.

A day earlier, leaders of various religious groups in Kerala had met the fishermen community protesting against the under-construction Vizhinjam sea-port here as part of efforts to bring peace in the area.

Violent demonstrations took place in this area recently.

A large number of people have been protesting outside the main entrance of the multipurpose sea-port at nearby Mulur for the past few months.

They were protesting over seven-point demands, including stopping the construction work and conducting a coastal impact study for the multi-crore project.

The protesters alleged that the unscientific construction of Groene as an upcoming port, an artificial sea wall, is one of the main reasons for increasing coastal erosion.
