The jacana survey has entered its eighth year this year. Since the number of jacanas exceeded 1,000 in 2016, the number has remained at more than 1,000, and it even exceeded 2,000 last year. Although there are some differences in the annual increase and decrease, it generally shows an upward trend.

This year's water chestnut survey was conducted today, with 111 investigators from 36 groups participating.

After sunrise, the investigators went to the areas where Jacacans may be found in individual sample plots to conduct surveys. The surveys were completed before 11:00 noon and the survey results were brought back to the Jacacans Park to calculate the overall number of Jacaens in the current year.

The participating investigators were bird lovers from all over Taiwan, students from Chiayi University, Tainan University, Chenggong University, and Pingtung University of Science and Technology in the south, and even investigators who came here from Penghu.

The recent severe water situation has also affected the distribution of Jacacans. Many investigators said in their reports: "Compared with the same period last year, there are more paddy fields and dry land this year. Due to the change of cultivated land, the water in the sample area All the pheasants have flown to other sample areas." It shows that the gathering places of Jacacans will change with the habitat conversion, and even if the water chestnuts will gradually wither in winter, the fields with only remnants of water chestnuts are still water chestnuts. Pheasant's favorite habitat.

The Tainan City Wild Bird Society believes that while seeing the increase in the number of jacanas, it is full of joy, but also worried that if the water chestnut fields gradually decrease in the future, it will inevitably have an impact on the jacana population.

Guantian District is still the main distribution area of jacanas, and more than 80% of jacanas are recorded in Guantian every year.

In addition, Jacacans have also been recorded in Anding, Baihe, Xiaying, Liujia, Madou, Shuiyan, Xinying, Liuying, Quyren, and Shanshang. This year, the number of jacana populations in each region has almost increased. It is hoped that the jacana population will also increase in the future. It can spread outward from Guantian District to various places.

As a result of the winter jacana survey in Tainan, 2,603 jacanas were found this year, an increase of 351 compared to last year.
