Voting is happening today for the Delhi MCD elections.

New Delhi:

Delhi MCD Election 2022: Voting for the first election after the unification of MCD is going on from eight o'clock in the morning.

Here the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is contesting the elections by making garbage the main issue.

At the same time, BJP (BJP) is looking confident of victory in the civic elections, while Congress (Congress) is expected to save the base.

Important information related to the case:

  • This time around 1.5 crore people are eligible to vote in 250 wards of Delhi.

Voting will start at 8 am and the polling station gates will close at 5.30 pm, only those who are inside after the gate closes can vote.

Metro rail services will start at 4 am on the day of polling, two hours earlier than usual.

The result of MCD election will come on 7th December.

  • This time more than 1300 candidates are in the fray in the Delhi MCD elections.

The AAP and the BJP, both currently controlling parts of Delhi's administration through the state and central governments, are fighting on all seats.

The Congress, which has been struggling to regain its ground in Delhi since the rise of the AAP, is contesting 247 seats after the nominations of three of its candidates were rejected on technical grounds.

  • Although the BJP has not formed a government in Delhi in the last 24 years, its control over the MCD has been strong.

Even after the AAP won a record 67 out of 70 seats in the 2015 assembly polls, the BJP retained the civic body two years later, winning 181 of its 272 seats.

AAP came second with 48 and Congress came third with 30.

  • The BJP deployed central ministers in a campaign led by Amit Shah, besides party chief JP Nadda and several chief ministers, to hand over the keys of some slum rehabilitation flats to PM Narendra Modi - one of the highlights of its campaign.

  • AAP had made preparations since the beginning of last year.

It directly put its stand on the issue of waste.

"We have improved things under the state, now we should also take care of cleanliness."

The slogan of "Kejriwal ki Sarkar, Kejriwal ke corporator" rivals the BJP's similar pitch of "Modi's double engine".

Both are contesting elections on the face of their top leaders.

  • The BJP has made promises of housing, and has accused several AAP ministers, including Manish Sisodia, of corruption.

CCTV videos of arrested minister Satyendar Jain getting 'special treatment' in Tihar Jail have surfaced.

Congress has also used them to take a jibe at AAP, but AAP has made noise claiming to be "fiercely honest".

Kejriwal says his "brilliant" work as chief minister will not be defeated by "fake allegations" and "misuse of central agencies".

  • The Congress hopes to get at least some semblance of influence.

Even after the death of Sheila Dikshit in 2019, it is doing reconstruction in Delhi.

Its focus on the macro-politics of ideology - evident in Rahul Gandhi's 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' which is still in central India.

  • There were riots in Delhi less than three years ago, and religion-based rhetoric was seen as communal propaganda.

Such rhetoric from Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat on social media entered the civic space of Delhi as well.

  • The stakes of political parties are high and the rhetoric is loud, so is the security.

Around 40,000 state police, 20,000 home guards, and over 8,000 personnel of paramilitary and state armed police have been deployed.

    Total force about 70,000.

Along with this, 60 drone cameras will keep an eye on sensitive areas.

"The focus of the police is to stop the flare-up of communalism.

  • The Delhi civic body is one of the three election battles being fought in parallel in the last few months.

The others are assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh and PM Modi's home state Gujarat, where the BJP is also in power.

Himachal was more of a Congress-BJP fight, but it is Gujarat where AAP is trying to push Congress aside and make inroads.
