Estonia, which is a member of NATO and borders Russia, will strengthen its defense capabilities by acquiring the high-tech American Hymars salvo missile system, the AP reported, citing Estonian defense officials.

The deal, which is the largest arms procurement project in the Baltic country's history, was signed yesterday and is worth more than $200 million.

It also includes ammunition and training to operate the system.

The US company Lockheed Martin is expected to start delivering the system in 2024.

Estonia: European countries should double their defense spending

Estonia's neighbors Latvia and Lithuania have already acquired or are also in the process of acquiring the Hymars system, BTA reported, citing AP.

Washington provided the missile launchers to Ukraine after the Russian invasion began.

The Estonian Defense Ministry said Hymars systems "helped to destroy Russian military ammunition depots, transport hubs and command and control centers with pinpoint accuracy".
