Aftab Poonawalla, accused of murdering Shraddha Walkar, often plays chess in jail.

New Delhi :

At the request of Aftab Amin Poonawalla, accused of murdering his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar, Tihar Jail officials gave him a copy of Paul Theroux's book 'The Great Railway Bazaar'.

Jail sources gave this information to news agency ANI on Saturday.

Tihar Jail sources said Aftab, a murder accused lodged in the jail, had requested the police to give him an English novel to read inside the jail.

Delhi Police has provided Aftab with American novelist Paul Theroux's travelogue 'The Great Railway Bazaar: By Train Through Asia'.

Sources said the jail authorities gave him the book because it was not based on crime and did not contain material that could cause him to harm others or himself.

According to the police, Aftab plays chess most of the time in jail.

Jail officials said, "Poonawalla passes the time by playing chess moves. He often plays alone and sometimes with two fellow inmates."

According to sources, "Aftab is fond of chess. He prepares different strategies and plays the board from both ends."

Sources said, "He is a good player in this game."

Aftab's cell has two undertrials living with him who are accused in a theft case.

According to sources, he has been asked to keep a close watch on him.

Jail sources also told that Aftab plans his moves against himself.

Delhi Police was suspicious of this from the beginning.

Aftab is very clever.

His every move seems to be part of a well-planned conspiracy, as if he is playing both ends alone...

Earlier, speaking to ANI, one of the investigators of the case said that Aftab had completely followed what the police asked him to do.

He confessed to his crime, cooperated with the police and agreed to polygraph and narco tests.

But now the police have started doubting his 'good' behaviour.

Apart from Aftab's 'obedient' behavior, the Delhi Police is also raising doubts over his 'rehearsed' answers.

Officials said, "Aftab's behavior and good conduct is under question. How can there be one answer to every question? It seems that the accused has already rehearsed the answers."

News agency ANI reported that, however, during interrogation, Aftab confessed that he used a Chinese chopper to chop Shraddha's body.

Delhi Police can do brain mapping to read Aftab's mind to find out what is going on inside.

Police said, "We are still waiting for the DNA report, only after that the brain mapping test will be considered."

In the beginning, Aftab was trying to mislead the Mumbai Police.

But, after the matter came under the jurisdiction of the Delhi Police, he started confessing his crime.

Police say they suspect it is part of their "devious" plan.

According to the information, the jail authorities have increased the security outside the jail quarter of Aftab Poonawalla.

An additional guard has been posted outside his barrack.

This step has been taken especially after the attack on a jail van carrying this alleged killer of Shraddha outside the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Delhi's Rohini.

Tihar Jail officials have also said that in view of the threat Aftab is facing inside the jail, special vigil is being kept around his cell.

Aftab neither talks much nor mixes with anyone.

According to jail officials, Aftab has no remorse for his actions.

Jail sources said, "It seems from his actions that Shraddha Walkar's murder was also part of a deeper conspiracy like his chess strategies."

Police had earlier said that Aftab had confessed to killing Shraddha and dismembering her body and was giving misleading answers to questions.
