Listen to the news

We eat more and more defrosted chicken.

The data on how native poultry farmers are gradually losing their positions in the market are also worrying.

The price of chicken meat has risen by about 35% in one year.

Imports will remain within 96-98 thousand tons, while domestic production is around 93-95 thousand tons.

Another sharp rise in prices: How much do basic products cost in our country and in Europe

This became clear from the words of the chairman of the Union of Poultry Breeders Ivaylo Galabov in the studio of "Bulgaria morning".

According to him, we should not turn our backs on the opportunity to satisfy our needs entirely with our own production.

"Bulgarian chicken meat is mainly freshly chilled. The market also has a variety of frozen poultry products of different origin. As consumers, it is important to know their origin and how they are produced. In Bulgaria, meat from third countries is hardly used after the events in Ukraine. A meat can be shock-frozen and then it retains its nutritional qualities. It is a common practice to thaw and re-freeze such meat, but at the moment it is not written on the packaging of the products," explained Galabov.

One of the leading reasons the industry is looking to frozen meat is the more attractive price.

Fresh chilled meat follows market trends in the EU.

At the moment, 1 kg of fresh chilled chicken costs about BGN 6 wholesale, pointed out the guest of Bulgaria ON AIR.

It is resorted to freezing meat, which subsequently appears on the markets and unfairly competes with all others, Galabov pointed out.

He appeals that the way of processing is reflected on the packaging.

According to him, there is a gap in the legislation that can easily be corrected.

"The war in Ukraine had a big impact on the grain market. Before the grain agreement was concluded, the price rose sharply, as Russia and Ukraine are the biggest producers in Europe. After the agreement, the price gradually started to fall. But the price of gas continues to be so high, and artificial fertilizers are produced from natural gas," emphasized the chairman of the Union of Poultry Breeders.

He assured that all producers work under the same standards, which are high, but that is not the case when we talk about frozen meat - there the criteria are lowered.

Finally, the guest warns that there are all the conditions to be worried about bird flu in our country.

But at this stage there is no danger that the egg shelves will remain empty.

No shortage of chicken meat is expected.

A hold and even a drop in prices can be expected in the coming year.
