The Chamber of Commerce made a proposal to increase the VAT for food and beverages to 9%.

Will such a measure reduce the value of the consumer basket - the analysis is by economists Vladimir Sirkarov and Associate Professor Ognyan Boyukliev from the Institute for Economic Research at the BAS.

According to the associate professor, the final price will not fall, similar to the situation with bread, whose VAT was abolished.

The industry wants 9% VAT on food and beverages

The pros are more than the cons, claims Vladimir Sirkarov, but emphasizes that the measure would help businesses rather than the consumer.

According to him, it cannot be counted on that the reduction of the food tax will reduce the inflationary crisis.

"52% of the revenue in the treasury is from VAT.

Of them, more than half are from food - these are the most traded goods", said Assoc. Boyukliev in the Nova TV studio.

According to him, foods should be differentiated according to the origin of the raw materials used in them, their health qualities and their origin, but Sirkarov claims that such differentiation would make the introduction of such a measure impossible.
